Artist Biography

Steve Rutherford is fast becoming one of the big names in the international photographic world. With a multitude of awards under his belt, a lengthy commercial client portfolio and big demand for his fine art landscape prints, he is clearly a photographer on the move.

Steve Rutherford's background has been as diverse as the images he shoots. He was a high level manager within the Australian Federal Police, he has been a Prison Officer at the notorious Long Bay Prison's Riot and Emergency Response Squad in Sydney and he was worked for the Australian Customs Service in the field of border protection.

There is no doubt that any person with this past has seen both the best and the worst that humanity can be. Steve Rutherford uses these experiences to look through his lens and add his own unique perspective to the world. This is a perspective that can find the simple beauty of a floating leaf, through to the sadness of an early morning on a deserted city street.

Steve Rutherford is also highly recognised by the photographic industry, as a leading and trusted professional, having been inducted into peak industry bodies including the AIPP (Australian Institute of Professional Photographers), the ACMP (Society of Australian Commercial and Media Photographers) and the PPA (Professional Photographers of America).

Today Steve Rutherford lives with his wife, Tanya, in his chosen home of Cairns, North Queensland, Australia. Described by many as one of the most beautiful places on the planet, it is easy to see where he draws his inspiration. At the same time, Steve Rutherford travels extensively, both for commercial clients and to collect images for his own fine art library. In the past ten years he has photographed extensively around Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, mainland USA, Alaska and Canada.
